Released on the eve of Elvis's 76th (January 8) and President Nixon's 98th (January 9) birthdays, the book is a trove of rare photos, original documents, and anecdotes from the December 21, 1970 encounter presented in a fun and interactive way for readers of all ages.
Told through the eyes of Egil "Bud" Krogh, White House aide and liaison to the Drug Enforcement Administration, The Day Elvis Met Nixon recounts the surprise of White House staffers when the King of Rock-n-Roll appeared at the front gates of the Executive Mansion to deliver a handwritten letter to the President.
For Elvis, the goal of the meeting was to receive a badge and credentials from the DEA as a "Federal Agent at Large," contending that he could use his popularity among the youth to curb the nation's narcotics epidemic.
Krogh tells how the Elvis meeting request moved up the White House chain of command, how it was approved, and how he arranged an agenda on such short notice.
At the meeting, Elvis presented the President with a gift, a silver-plated Colt 45 gun and bullets now on display at the Nixon Presidential Library in Yorba Linda, Calif. Later the same afternoon, he received his badge from the DEA.
Today, the Oval Office photo of President Nixon and Elvis Presley continues to be the most requested photo from the National Archives.
"The meeting between Elvis and President Nixon remains in my mind the most novel and interesting," writes Krogh. "While these two men came from totally different backgrounds, they tried to find ways to cooperate in responding to one of the most severe problems."

New Historic Conflict in JFK Case
/PRNewswire/ -- Tim Miller, president of publishing company FlatSigned Press, had the privilege of being authorized to produce the final memoirs of the late President Gerald R. Ford -- the last surviving member of the Warren Commission, which was assembled by President Lyndon B. Johnson to investigate the JFK Assassination. Ford always stated publicly that he stood behind the findings of the Warren Commission even after other members of the same commission admitted that they believed the report was flawed and did not give the whole truth. Additionally, President Johnson, Nixon and even the US Congress have stated that it was flawed and that the US Congress believed there was a conspiracy.
In this final book, a collector's book hand-signed by former President Ford with only 3000 copies ever printed, Ford either deliberately or accidentally included hidden clues or conflicts with the official Warren Commission Report. For example, as he addresses the lingering questions and conspiracy theories surrounding the Kennedy assassination one by one, he confirms the role of at least one CIA employee in hiding and destroying information regarding the assassination even though the Warren Commission reported that the CIA did NOT destroy anything.
Therefore, shortly after the release of Ford's final book entitled, President John F. Kennedy: Assassination Report of the Warren Commission, this historical collector's book became extremely controversial. Ford had three years to correct his words and the official record before his death, yet he instead gifted over 100 copies of the book to his close friends and family including Vice President Dick Cheney.
After President Ford died on December 26, 2007, the story started to change. In 2008 Miller received an unsolicited email from a retired anchorman requesting a face-to-face meeting. During that meeting, Miller was told that the Kennedy family did NOT want the files opened and asked that Miller stop pushing the issue, which rang of an attempted cover-up even after 45 years.
The new information had left both the Ford family and Kennedy families feeling uncomfortable and now, along with the help of a Michigan newspaper, they are casting doubt on Ford's book. Additionally, in that news story, the Ford family references the book as says it is in the hands of their lawyers and implied and/or are threatening to sue Miller and his company for fabricating the whole thing; even though Miller, his staff and the staff of President Ford spent countless hours working with the late President Ford on the book.
Mr. Miller has a written contract, which is signed by Ford, Miller and a third-party witness, Penny Circle, who at the time was President Ford's Chief of Staff and is now Chief of Staff for Mrs. Ford. In addition, each of the 3000 books include an original photograph of President Ford signing the special, signed page and Penny Circle is pictured in each of these original photographs.
"I was not a believer in conspiracy theories until I began working with Ford and his staff on his final book, said Miller. "As I began reading what President Ford had written, flaws and carefully worded statements seem to jump out at me that supported facts, which had been presented by many others surrounding the JFK assassination," adds Miller.
Often, the credibility of one's contention can be measured by the speed at which others try to silence it. Therefore, Miller will be hosting a press conference to share this revealing information with the public, to prove its legitimacy, and to announce his recent filing of a FOIA request demanding the release of the JFK Assassination Files from the CIA.
Miller believes the public has a right to know what really happened. Scientists Announce the Discovery of a 47-Million-Year-Old Primate Fossil that is Set to Revolutionize Our Understanding of Human Evolution
/PRNewswire/ -- Scientists have announced today the discovery of a 47-million-year-old human ancestor. Discovered in the Messel Pit, Germany, the fossil is twenty times older than most fossils that explain human evolution. Known as "Ida," the fossil is a transitional species, showing characteristics of the very primitive nonhuman evolutionary line (prosimians, such as lemurs), but even more closely those of the human evolutionary line (anthropoids, such as monkeys, apes, and humans). This places Ida at the very root of anthropoid evolution -- when primates were first developing the features that would evolve into our own. The scientists' findings are published today by PLoS One, the open-access journal of the Public Library of Science.
Little, Brown and Company, a division of Hachette Book Group, will publish THE LINK, by Colin Tudge, on Wednesday, May 20, 2009. The book will reveal in full detail the entire story of the discovery, excavation, and preservation, and the revolutionary significance of Ida. THE LINK begins with a foreword by Norwegian fossil scientist Dr. Jorn Hurum of the University of Oslo's Natural History Museum, who for the past two years has led an international team of scientists as they secretly conducted a detailed forensic analysis of the extraordinary fossil, studying the data to decode humankind's ancient origins. At 95 percent complete, Ida is set to revolutionize our understanding of human evolution.
Unlike Lucy and other famous primate fossils found in Africa's Cradle of Mankind, Ida is a European fossil, preserved in Germany's Messel Pit, a mile-wide crater whose oil-rich shale is a significant site for fossils of the Eocene Epoch. Fossil analysis reveals that the prehistoric primate was a young female. Opposable big toes and nails rather than claws confirm that the fossil is a primate, and the presence of a talus bone in the foot links Ida directly to humans.
The fossil also features the complete soft body outline as well as the gut contents. A herbivore, Ida feasted on fruits, seeds, and leaves. X-rays reveal both baby and adult teeth, and the lack of a "toothcomb," which is an attribute of lemurs. The scientists estimate Ida's age when she died to be approximately nine months, and she measured approximately two feet in length.
-- Ida lived 47 million years ago, at a critical period in the Earth's
history. Her life fell within the Eocene Epoch, a time when the
blueprints for modern mammals were being established. After dinosaurs
became extinct, early horses, bats, whales, and many other creatures,
including the first primates, thrived on a subtropical planet. The
Earth was just beginning to take the shape that we know and recognize
today -- the Himalayas were being formed and modern flora and fauna
were evolving. Land mammals, including primates, lived amid vast
jungles.
-- Ida was found to be lacking two of the key anatomical features found
in lemurs: a grooming claw on the second digit of the foot, and a
fused row of teeth in the middle of her lower jaw, known as a
toothcomb. She has nails rather than the claws typical of
nonanthropoid primates such as lemurs, and her teeth are similar to
those of monkeys. Her forward-facing eyes are like ours -- which would
have enabled her fields of vision to overlap, allowing 3-D vision and
an ability to judge distance.
-- The fossil's hands show a humanlike opposable thumb. Like all
primates, Ida has five fingers on each hand. Her opposable thumb would
have provided a precision grip. In Ida's case, this would have been
useful for climbing and gathering fruit; in our case, it allows
important human functions such as making tools and writing. Ida also
would have had flexible arms, which would have allowed her to use both
hands for any task that cannot be done with one -- like grabbing a
piece of fruit.
-- Evidence of a talus bone links Ida to us. The bone has the same shape
as it does in humans today, though the human talus is obviously
bigger. Extensive X-rays, CT scanning, and computer tomography reveal
Ida to have been about nine months old when she died and provide clues
to her diet, which included berries and plants. Furthermore, the lack
of a bacculum (penis bone) means that the fossil was definitely
female.
-- X-rays reveal that a broken wrist may have contributed to Ida's death
-- her left wrist was healing from a bad fracture. The scientists
believe she was overcome by carbon dioxide gas while she was drinking
from the Messel Lake; the still waters of the lake were often covered
with a low-lying blanket of the gas as a result of the volcanic forces
that formed the lake and were still active. Hampered by her broken
wrist, Ida slipped into unconsciousness, was washed into the lake, and
sank to the bottom, where the unique conditions preserved her for 47
million years.
THE LINK will be published in the United Kingdom by Little, Brown, in Germany by Piper Verlag, and in France by JC Lattes. The findings of the two-year study will also be revealed by Atlantic Productions in a special documentary film, The Link, to be screened by History on Monday May 25, 2009, at 9:00 p.m. EDT/PDT, and broadcast worldwide in over twenty countries.
